In case some of you don’t know these legends that well, here is a brief introduction about them.
1. Leonard Cohen
Leonard Cohen, a Canadian singer-songwriter, was famous for his baritone voice, iconic songs and poetic lyrics. Born in 1934, Cohen was an early guitarist and writer. He started composing and releasing pop and folk-rock songs by mid-1960s. An infamous composition of Cohen is Hallelujah, which is a song on Various Positions of 1984. In 2008, Cohen got a place in the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was honored with a Grammy Award for a lifetime achievement in the year 2010. In 2016, Cohen died at an age of 82.
2. Prince
Prince, the legendary American singer, songwriter, musician and music producer achieved fame during the 1980s with albums like Purple Rain and 1999. The former was also used as the soundtrack of the movie with the same name. Some of the later albums by the musician are Musicology, Diamonds and Pearls and Sign ‘O’ the Times.
Prince was born with the name Prince Rogers Nelson at Minneapolis in Minnesota, on June 7, 1958. The singer’s early career in music involved the release of Controversy, Dirty Mind, and Prince. Then, he launched the albums Purple Rain and 1999, reinforcing his status of a superstar with hits such as Let’s Go Crazy and When Doves Cry. A winner of Grammy for seven times, the musician had a marvelous output, which consisted of later albums such as Musicology, The Gold Experience, and Diamonds and Pearls. He breathed his last on April 21, 2016.
3. David Bowie
David Bowie, an English rock star, was well-known for his electrifying musical transformations, which include the character Ziggy Stardust. In 1996, Bowie attained a place in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
On January 8, 1947, David Bowie was born in the Brixton neighborhood of South London. Bowie’s first hit was Space Oddity in the year 1969. Bowie, an original pop chameleon, became a sci-fi character in his album Ziggy Stardust. Later, Fame was co-written by him with John Lennon and Carlos Alomar. It became the singer’s first No. 1 single in the year 1975. In 1976, Bowie, who was also a renowned actor, played a role in “The Man Who Fell to Earth”. He breathed his last on January 10, 2016, shortly following the release of his final album.
4. George Michael
A Grammy Award-winner, songwriter and singer, George Michael was a famous pop star of 1980s and 1990s. Faith, the star’s 1987 album, was awarded with a Grammy for being the best album of that year.
On June 25, 1963, George was born at London in England. He created the band Wham as a teenager with Andrew Ridgeley, his high school friend. The two had their very first global hit with the song Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go in 1984. After two years, Michael started performing solo, and he launched Faith, a hit debut album. Over 25 million copies of the album were sold worldwide. Michael’s career underwent a reboot in mid-2000s with the launch of Twenty Five, one of the greatest hit albums of the singer. At 53, Michael breathed his last on December 25, 2016.
5. Glenn Frey
Songwriter and guitarist, Glenn Frey was a co-founder of “Eagles”, an infamous band in the history of rock music. Glenn Frey took birth in Detroit in the year 1948. His inspiration to play guitar came from the Beatles. In 1971, he created Eagles with drummer, Don Henley, bassist, Randy Meisner, and guitarist, Bernie Leadon. They went on to achieve the position of one of the biggest and most successful rock bands. Glenn also dabbled in acting and was a brilliant solo artist. He left the world on January 18, 2016 in New York City.
6. Rick Parfitt
Rick Parfitt, an English musician, was well-known as a rhythm guitarist, songwriter and singer for the rock band “Status Quo”. Rick Parfitt was born on October 12, 1948, at Woking in Surrey. Rick began learning to play guitar at an age of 11. He wrote hits such as Again and Again and Whatever You Want. Before rising to fame, Rick played with the band known as “The Highlights”, under stage name Ricky Harrison. He left the world on December 24, 2016 at the age of 68.
