Deviating from the more punk sound on their 2019 debut release No. 3, Calm Down is filled with great grooves, tight production, and pop n’ rock charm. It has all the elements that one would want to hear from a pop n’ rock song like groove-filled rhythms, intense riffs and lyrics and its no wonder if you want to sing along. It is smooth and easy to hear – that is, the production has been done taking into account that audiences are not hogged with heavy concepts that are hard to get through easily. The meaning behind the lyrics and the craftsmanship – both has been taken into great consideration here.
But the journey to production was not a smooth process. In an interview, the American singer songwriter Cade revealed how the song that to go through multiple times of trial process before the band could settle down satisfied with the final one.
“This song had a brutal upbringing. We tore it apart and put it back together too many times to count, but we all knew there was something special hidden within the groove we just had to chisel it out” explains Cade.
“Cade’s open-hearted songwriting and energetic performance style are two of the defining features of The BRKN’s music” – says the American Songwriter.
The band members – Jacob Cade (guitar and vocals), Mike Bokenkamp (drums), and MJ Younkers (guitar) – wanted to take a different approach to their song this time. ’Calm Down’ proved to be one of the most challenging songs we’ve written so far as a band. It sort of got pushed to the side for a while, and we weren’t sure how we felt about it in the beginning. We really wanted to make it work, but we struggled to find the right sound and feel for the song. Once we played around with it, we stumbled upon some really great things that just pushed the song to a much more energetic place we all loved” says Bokenkamp.
