It begins with the strumming of a guitar, which immediately gives you the idea of the artist sitting among friends and planning to hum away a favorite song after being cajoled earnestly by friends. You would almost reach the point of believing you are being swept away by the vibes of Summer Holiday by Cliff Richard. But then, just like the pendulum, the audience oscillates to the other end and you would get a familiarity with the vibes of Shakira’s “Underneath Your Clothes”.
Of course the views might not be the same and you would come up with some other influences. But it is true. Anthropologist and musician/producer Ramsey Elkholy, the New York-based collective delivers fresh sounding music layered with atmospheric vibes.
Maybe, you would find yourself humming to
“Buy yourself a dream
Buy yourself a car and a house to live
Get yourself a girl, someone to come home everyday
Buy yourself a dream
But it won’t mean a thing”
A hint of contradiction in this last line I find – Upon listening to the lines, it felt that the singer is asking his audience to not waste time and chase your dreams. However, that feeling gets immediately worn off when the singer hums “but it won’t mean a thing” Does the artist mean to say we can chase all the materialistic wealth you wish for but in the end nothing matters?
When asked about the song Elkholy explains, “It’s a song that reflects more on the journey than the destination. We often miss out on the best parts of life when we put too much focus on material goals. That’s the basic gist of the song.”
That apart, the song’s danceable groove hinges on glaring riffs and a chantable refrain. “It’s got an upbeat vibe that feels right for summer, but also speaks to the times, in terms of all the youth energy we are seeing out in the streets, which I think is leading to real change” explains Elkholy.
The song is a follow-up to the chase your dreams positive vibes of “Kids of Summer”, “Buy Yourself a Dream” has a hypnotic beat that gives way to swirling ambient pulse as thought-provoking lyrics percolate to the forefront.
To add a cherry on the top, the cover picture of the album is worth noting. I really liked the concept and it gives way to some unchartered thoughts.
