Deep Purple Sage – the latest project release by psychedelic folk band Sundance Jump, is an intricate blend of timeless folk and enduring psychedelia.
An old school epic, the songs seem to be influenced by early 60s and 70s style. The vocals reveal the classic American rock-n-roll vibe, coupled with an assertive and angsty swagger. In addition to the style the music tracks in the album feature poetic lyrics and complex narratives.
There are 11 songs in the album that have been recorded with ready and rough sounds, capturing the four piece’s energy and spirit.
You will find this right at the beginning when you listen to the opening track “Ally, Are You Okay?” You cannot help notice how the track swaggers with a knowing confidence and the so well known American vibe that breaks forward and gives the project a solid introduction.
But don’t mislead yourself by assuming that the album is all about American rock-n-roll.
As you listen to different tracks, you will realize how the album shifts through different styles and shades as it moves from one track to another ultimately creating an evolved sound beyond the rockabilly aesthetic.
Some tracks like “Sew My Shadows” and “Library of Dreams” are short-lived instrumental. Again, tracks like “Three Little Stars” and “Don Juanita” take dark atmospheric and sultry tones.
These have been wonderfully placed in contrast to rock-n-roll anthemics such as “Boss Man Says”, “Zodiac Killer”, and “Johnny’s Too Young”.
